Why the Latest Wireless Routers on my list are expensive?

Lots of people wondering that why I didn’t include the most of the cheapest models from D-Link, Asus and Linksys in my Top 10 list? Well, the answer is simple.

  • These routers are extremely low in performance.
  • To be honest, they do deliver less experience compared to the expensive routers out there in the market.
  • Currently, there are clients who wound love to can take advantage of the latest gigabit speed.
  • Mobile Apps are ready.
  • Long term warranty too

So, in simple words, you are paying for performance, and there are computer system or client which can handle it.

However, we believe in the middle of 2017 (July), the clients which can utilize this latest tech will be available. So, I hope both of these routers will make it to the top of our Best Wireless Routers 2017 List.

1. ASUS RT-AC88U Wireless-AC3100 – The Best Wifi to Buy In 2017

Asus RT-AC88U Router ReviewThe ASUS RT-AC88U Wireless Router is a game changer. It fully equipped with a latest 4×4 802.11ac MU-MIMO technology and 8 Gigabit LAN ports. It’s a dual-band router that delivers the speed you crave and security you need.

The ASUS RT-AC88U comes with a data rate of 3167 Mbps with whole-home extended coverage, and Smart Connect ensure fast, stable connectivity for all your Wi-Fi devices.

This is perfect for gaming, set-up boxes or anything else that needs an unwavering gigabit. Also, it’s easy and more intuitive to manage your ASUS RT-AC88U router with it’s ASUS’s Router App.

However, the bottom line is the AC88U is probably the strongest, most powerful home router currently available. But its advantages over a more mainstream AC router such as the 68U are likely only going to make economic sense in busier, more complex networking environments. I consider it the top choice in any mixed environment, where ethernet is significantly deployed.

Now you can extend the Wi-Fi signal for both of the router’s dual bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz) with Wireless Repeater Mode, or just one of the bands with Wireless Bridge Mode. Either option effectively turns the WRT1900ACS into a powerful range extender or wireless bridge, adding range and speed to wired and wireless connections on your network.

Also, its users can use the parental control features to control and monitor what kids do on the internet.

Furthermore, I would like to start by saying I absolutely love this router. Its WIFI range is great, its dual band so I have choices and I can set up a guest network with the click of my mouse. It has a friendly User interface that allows everyday users to make changes as they see fit. It also allows for media prioritization by simply dragging your computer, or any device to the top of the list or to a separate list. This will ensure that no matter how many devices are connected your chosen device will always get what bandwidth it needs.
What We Like (PROS)
  • Comes with an incredibly powerful hardware.

5. TP-Link AC1900 Wireless Wi-Fi Router – Best Range Wireless Router

TP Link Archer C9 Review
This AC1900 wifi router is best for a connected home. Whether you have smart home products, 4k streaming, online video gaming, or the whole family’s smartphones, the Archer C9 is engineered for fast and reliable wifi for the entire home.

The 1GHz dual-core processor will ensure that your media streaming will not buffer if someone else is downloading a 4K movie in another room. Perhaps you have simultaneous devices connected taking up bandwidth, the beamforming technology will laser-focus your wireless signal to where you need it most.

Superior wifi bandwidth utilization increases wifi range, delivering highly targeted and efficient wireless connections. Never more will you need to miss that climatic action scene, or booted out of a gaming server. TP-Link’s AC1900 wireless router is the solution for your home network.

After testing it, I have four words: it just works period. The signal is strong and punches through the lathe-and-plaster walls of my nearly 100 year old house. Its signal is considerably stronger than the WRT1900ACS that I had mentioned above (which cost almost three times what this one did), and rivaled the signal strength of the $400 ASUS. It doesn’t drop connections, doesn’t reboot itself, and delivers a strong and steady stream of data to all devices, wired and wireless.

Only one word of warning; you need to make sure the Archer C7 that you purchase is NOT a first version. Everyone on the web has reported that TP-LINK badly botched the V1, especially for Macintosh/Apple devices (which is most of my house); most of those should be out of circulation or in landfills by now. Below is a Link to the one I bought from Amazon was a V2, and it works perfectly with all of my Apple and non-Apple devices.

What We Like (PROS)
  • Good Wi-Fi speeds at range
  • Easy to setup and use
  • Rock solid reliability
  • Good feature set for the price
What We Didn't (CONS)
  • Can’t compete with fastest routers over short distances
  • Only one USB 3.0 port
  • Can’t be wall mounted or laid flat

6. Netgear AC5300 Nighthawk X8 Tri-Band

Netgear AC5300 Nighthawk X8 reviewThe Nighthawk X8 AC5300 Smart Wi-Fi Router is the next wave in Wi-Fi. With Tri-Band Quad Stream performance, delivers combined wireless speeds of up to 5.3 Gbps. Four external Active Antennas combined with four internal antennas amplify and maximize Wi-Fi range. X8’s Powerful 1.4GHz Dual Core Processor gives you a high-performance networking engine for faster connections.

Aggregate 2 of the 6 Gigabit ports to double your wired speeds to network attached storage. Quad-Stream with MU-MIMO support allows you to enjoy simultaneous streaming to your devices for speeds up to 4x faster than traditional Wi-Fi.

The device makes installation almost effortless. it allows you to easily monitor, connect and control your home network from a PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Android device. This device is a higher to Nighthawk X6 AC3200 which also has Tri-band WiFi that delivers multiple bands for homes with many WiFi devices. Wifi speed up to 3.2Gbps and 6 high performance antennas provide maximum speed and range. Smart connect allows you to game, stream, and download mega-sized files without lags.. provides an extensible design that enables Service prioritization for data. Design that delivers high availability, scalability, and for maximum flexibility and price/performance.

So this router works great but……my x6 also worked great and in hindsight, I would choose the x6 again over buying the X8 and save the $$$.
The MIMO (Multiple in, Multiple out) ability of this router is what’s amazing. So when lots of devices are active on the same network, it shines. But if you mainly are just using one or two devices at a time, then stick with the x6: i.e. When I’m on my iPad streaming Netflix, I’m not on my Apple TV or using my iPhone too much. They are different use cases. If you are trying to push the internet to an AppleTV, and a gaming console, and two iPads, and stream music all at the same time, then get the x8.
What We Like (PROS)
  • Very fast Wi-Fi
  • More Ethernet ports than most
  • Smart Connect for 5GHz bands
What We Didn't (CONS)
  • Smart Connect doesn’t cover all three bands
  • USB ports hidden under flap
  • Very large

7. Linksys AC5400 Tri-Band Wireless Router

Linksys AC5400 Wifi ReviewIdeal for busy households and home offices, the Linksys AC5400 delivers Next-Gen AC Wi-Fi for lag-free productivity and entertainment. MU-MIMO delivers Wi-Fi to multiple devices—4K TVs, streaming media players, game consoles, laptops, tablets, and smartphones—at the same time and same speed, treating multiple devices as if each has its own dedicated router.

This is a great WiFi router if you have the desk space for this monster, because it will also speed up your old-school devices! Using this device will blow away your mind, since the transfer speed will remain fast with clients transferring data simultaneously. This is already widely reported, so this was not part of my test.
What We Like (PROS)
  • MU-MIMO capability
  • Exceptional performance at all ranges

Signal strength is much much better than 825. D-Link has revamped config menu and tried to made it look more user friendly apparently. Being a little tech savvy, would have preferred old menu or rather have an option to switch back to the tech savvy mode.
What We Like (PROS)
  • Excellent 5GHz and Multi-User Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) throughput.
  • Fast file-transfer speeds.
  • Unique design.
  • Highly configurable.
  • Attractive design.
What We Didn't (CONS)
  • Expensive.
  • Large footprint.

9. AmpliFi HD (High-Density) Home Wi-Fi System

Amplified HD Home Wifi ReviewThe AmpliFi HD (High-Density) Home Wi-Fi System includes a Router and two Mesh Points for Wi‑Fi coverage throughout your home. The AmpliFi HD system delivers maximum throughput to meet your streaming and gaming demands with lag-free performance. The Router features an innovative and simple design with an intuitive touchscreen display.

The Mesh Points provide enhanced coverage to eliminate dead spots in your home. A mobile app is available for iOS and Android platforms for instant setup and easy management.

I have the router in my basement at the far south side of the house. The MP’s are located about an equal distance from each other and the router in the main floor. One to the NE and the other to the N towards the long side of the house. I get full coverage everywhere. NO dead spots. In the area I used to drop to horrible speeds on the AirPort express extension (I was getting about 5-7mpbs), I know get ~90 mbps…this is the worst spot in the house and it’s a great signal. Outside, I’d get drops all the time. Now I get a much stronger signal in the yard (front and back) and in the garage. I had trouble streaming anything out there and would often just go to AT&T LTE instead. Now? Through multiple walls and brick, I get between 25-50mbps outdoors for a reasonable distance. Again, outstanding!

At this time, presuming this router unit doesn’t develop the issue the other one did (touch loss), I have no issue recommending this product and company highly! Again, their service for me was great, fast and what I needed. PLUS, the router has a great nice display that shows data use which is great for those of us under the horrible Comcast data cap! Just update the firmware and it will retain your info even after a reboot.

I’d recommend AmpliFi HD for expansive homes with thick or steel-reinforced walls filled with mid- to heavy users. A system with a centrally-located base and satellites toward the sides of your home will get everyone the Wi-Fi they need, even upstairs and down.

If your home isn’t a mansion built like a fortress, you can certainly get away with the basic or LR AmpliFi system to save a bit more.

What We Like (PROS)
  • Delivers three simultaneous spatial streams (up and down) on both frequency bands
  • Four-port gigabit switch on the router
  • Attractive industrial design, with a touchscreen LCD
What We Didn't (CONS)
  • No dedicated network for data backhaul
  • Detachable antennas on mesh nodes could prove to be fragile
  • Mesh points require grounded outlets
  • Expensive

This means up to three times faster connections on all of your devices. The ATHENA brings peak performance to what other routers would consider a crowded network.

Much much faster than my previous wireless router. Not really sure of the validity associated with speedtest.net – but download and upload speeds were 2-5 time faster than with my older d-link router. It was noticeable for me in performance – webpage loading and VPN. There are two frequencies – 2.4 and 5. Most devices can connect to either. I also think that this router deals with multiple devices really well. We have a number of devices and I would get dropped from the network constantly. Haven’t had that now for some time (can’t remember that happening in the absence of complete internet outage – (Comcast)). Finally the signal strength is also significantly better than my old d-link. Reaching corners of the house that I hadn’t be able to reach.
What We Like (PROS)

The wireless router surprisingly gives the terrific performance.
The performance over Wi-Fi is even better regardless of the number of devices connected to it.
Setting up the router is a breeze and can be done with anyone who has a little knowledge about networking.

What We Didn't (CONS)

Lacks some of the features that are available in competitors.
Price may not allure everyone.

13. D-Link DIR 890L Tri-Band (Editor’s Choice)

D-Link AC3200 Ultra ReviewLet’s just consider it a younger, yet excellent sibling of the DIR-890 that we reviewed earlier. There are quite some changes when compared to the DIR-890, for instance, this one happens to be a dual band router. But is it even worthy? As a matter of fact, according to our testing, this router manages to outperform the much expensive elder brother and has a lot of refined features that are both easy to use and come without a hassle. So how much difference there is between both routers from D-Link? Let’s find out.

The router has the same design you would expect from a D-Link router, if you are concerned about having detachable antennas, then don’t worry. All the antennas can easily be detached, and replaced with ones that will provide you higher Wi-Fi range. With that said, thanks to the detachable antennas, the router is actually very compact. Another great feature about this router is that it can be remotely managed via the cloud service that is being provided by D-Link, and although it may seem like a gimmick to some, it is actually a very useful feature, especially if you are in a different room than the router itself.

With that said, the parts that represent the performance are actually really amazing. Testing revealed that this is perhaps a good router, the performance on both bands was amazing, and the Wi-Fi range managed to impress us. As for the transfer rates, they managed to be perfect, and we didn’t find any sort of disconnection or slow speeds.

The only downside of this router is that the web interface is a bit of a surprise for both the newcomers and people who have been using D-Link routers for a long time.

At this point, it would be safe to conclude that perhaps one of the best router on the list and definitely one of the best wireless routers is the DIR-880L by D-Link. It happens to prefer both style and substance, and doesn’t sacrifice one for the other.
What We Like (PROS)

Long range and stable Wi-Fi capabilities.
Excellent speed on both 2.4 gigahertz and 5 gigahertz bands.
Extremely easy to use, with the ability to be controlled by D-Link’s cloud service.

What We Didn't (CONS)

The web interface might be a bit too modern for both the newcomers and the old D-Link users.

Wireless Router Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the points as mentioned earlier in mind, you can quickly go out to the market and buy a wireless router, right? Hell No!
For those who don’t know, wireless routers come with several things you need to consider before you spend the hard earned money. They have different available speeds as well as different WiFi standards and support for multiple bands.

The technology that is behind a Wireless Router?

Every wireless router consists of three major points, the router itself, a network switch and a wireless access point.

  • The router serves the purpose of managing and directing traffic to the different devices connected to your network, in simpler terms, a router is responsible for sending data from your system to the other systems out there.
  • As for the network switch, the purpose of a network switch is to connect all your devices that are running WiFi to other wired devices using Ethernet cables.
  • Lastly, a wireless access point is just a single station that has an antenna, and the only job of a wireless access point is to transmit and receive wireless signals.

Best wireless routers 2017

To make things easier for you below is the list of “best wireless routers type” you will encounter in the market along with their brief descriptions.

  • Dual Band Routers: Perhaps the most common type of routers are dual band routers, if you are wondering why they got such a name, it’s because these routers operate on 2 different frequencies; 2.4 gigahertz and 5 gigahertz. They also happen to be the cheapest type of wireless routers available.
  • Tri-Band Routers: These routers are comparatively newer in the market and offer three bands; two of the bands are 5 gigahertz, and one happens to be the 2.4 gigahertz band. Considering how these routers are still new in the market, they are consistently introducing new and new technologies with the passage of time.
  • N600 Routers: For those who don’t know, the N600 routers are the routers that have a combined speed of 600 Mbps; the speed is then evenly split between the 2.4 gigahertz and the 5 gigahertz band. They are comparatively old but are known to get the job done. However, they aren’t suggested for the modern high-speed internet.
  • N900 Routers: These routers are the upgraded versions of the N600 routers, these routers have a combined speed of 900 Mbps that is evenly divided between the 2.4 and the 5 gigahertz bands.

Furthermore, to compare with the previously mentioned routers, these offer a combined high speed of 1750 Mbps; however, the speed of these routers isn’t evenly split. The 2.4 gigahertz band gets a speed of 450 Mbps, and the 5 gigahertz band takes the remaining 1,300 Mbps speed.
When compared to the AC1750 routers, these are quite similar. However, they offer a higher speed of 600 Mbps the 2.4 gigahertz, and the same 1,300 Mbps speed on the 5 gigahertz band.
These routers start drifting towards the tri-band territory; they have a combined speed of 3,200 Mbps, 2,600 Mbps is evenly split between the two 5 gigahertz bands, and the remaining 600 Mbps is dedicated to the 2.4 gigahertz band.

Perhaps the latest offering in the market is the AC5300 routers; these routers have a combined speed of 5,300 Mbps or 5.3 Gbps. The speed alone makes them the fastest and the most expensive routers that are currently available in the market.
However, there are no Clients (PCs, Laptops, Mobile Devices) available in the market which can support that much speed. So we can say that AC5300 is offering a speed which is useless for now.
These routers are comparatively different than the ones we have mentioned before. As compared to all the other wireless routers, the DD-WRT compliant routers use a Linux based third party firmware and have a lot of features that are missing from the conventional routers. DD-WRT routers are basically like phones that are rooted or phones that are jailbroken.

With said, there are limitless options available when it comes to finding the wireless routers in today’s day and age, the market is quite saturated, and every manufacturer is trying their best to bring up the best possible router there for consumers to enjoy.

Here I’m also going to include some FAQs about Wireless Routers.

  • A wireless Router is a mundane device?
  • What is the biggest advantage?
  • Why people buy cheap routers?
  • Why you need to spend more money on Modern and Advanced Wifi router?

Advantages and Functionalities of Modern and Advanced Wireless Router

Most modern wireless routers have the ability to provide you with a unique IP address for all the devices you connect to the internet, since how the Internet Protocol address is unique and not available to the public; your network will not be prone to get hacked.
A good wireless router will always be easy to set up with features that are easy to understand and intuitive. A good wireless router will also make sure that the use of cables is as less as possible to stay true to its legacy.
For people who are into NAS (Network Attached Storage) many flagship wireless routers come with the support for external hard drive, this means that you can easily plug in your external hard drive to the port that is available on the wireless router.

Most of the top of the line wireless routers come with the support of DLNA, for those who don’t know, DLNA is a technology that you can use to have proper control over how audio, video, and media controlled over the network you are using.
Last but not the least, most high-end routers also come with some additional advantages like the prioritization of systems, the ability to do shared printing over the USB, parental control as well backup servers for sensitive data.

Conclusion – Wrapping it up

Considering how the market of wireless routers is pretty saturated, finding the perfect wireless router is never an easy task. That’s when lists like these come into play. The list was carefully crafted, keeping in mind things like the needs of a customer and how much are they willing to spend on a wireless router.

We hope the list helps you pick the best wireless router according to your budget. Do keep in mind that there’s no such thing as a “perfect” component, that’s why each router is built to suit the need of different consumers. We have added routers that are for budget oriented consumers as well as the routers that are for networking elites. In case you think we missed on a good router, let us know.
